The government should withdraw excessive control on educational institutions and grant autonomy to all deserving institutes. “It must create a transparent system that will monitor educational institutions to make them on a par with those in developed countries,” said G Viswanathan, Founder and Chancellor of VIT University.

At a press conference to announce that the university would conduct computer-based entrance examination for admission into the B.Tech programmes in Dubai and Kuwait also, he said excessive control by government would only cripple any innovation in the field of education.

He expressed hope that the new education policy being framed by the Union Government would reform the education system in the country to enable it to compete with global giants.

Low participation

According to him, today there are 45 lakh international students (who migrate from one country to another country for education), of which India’s share is meagre 1 per cent. “This is despite that we have best campuses in the country and potential to scale up the quality of education to a much higher level.”

Speaking on VIT University, he said the demand for the programmes from students based in Dubai and Kuwait was very high, and hence the decision to conduct exams in Dubai and Kuwait this year. “Over a period, we will consider conducting exams in other countries too, depending on the demand,” he said.

This year, the computer-based test will be conducted from April 8-19. The counselling for admissions will be between May 11-16, he said.
