A massive fire gutted nearly 150 slums at Ultadanga, located in the north-eastern fringe of Kolkata, this morning.

According to State fire and emergency services’ officials, the fire broke at around 5.30 am in the Basanti slum area at Ultadanga. Twenty fire tenders rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control in three hours, they said.

The cause of the fire was not known, the officials added. While the fire damaged property and belongings of the slum dwellers, no casualties have been reported in the incident so far.

Local political leaders said the slums were prone to fire accidents and pucca houses should be built for the slum-dwellers to avoid such incidents in the future.
