The Congress has asked the Narendra Modi government to focus on economic progress than “insulting” those protesting against the growing incidents of intolerance in the country.

The party’s Deputy Leader in the Rajya Sabha Anand Sharma said the government had failed to deliver on its promises and was engaging in acts that had shocked the society. He said Ministers were making outrageous statements to divert attention from their “dismal failure” and lack of sensitivity when it comes to the plight of the poor and the farmers.

Sharma said the country’s liberal democracy is under assault from forces that don’t believe in a pluralistic society. “The Prime Minister must explain – is he conscious of his Constitutional duties and will his Government take action against those who are guilty of doing what is not permissible as per the Constitution of Indian Republic?” he asked.

Sharma said instead of using strong language against critics, the Ministers should listen to what others are saying. “Prime Minister and this government must remember that they cannot hoodwink the people either in this country or in the world. Our economy is in a bad state. Our share in the global trade has contracted sharply when there has been an international global expansion of trade. These happenings and developments are hurting the image of India,” Sharma added.

Sharma said economies are not managed by loud words. “They are run by pragmatic approach; they are run on the basis of sound policies. High decibels and attractive words using number of alphabets of the Indian dictionary is no substitute for sound policies,” he said.
