Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari is visiting the city and Visakhapatnam port on Friday to inaugurate several projects and to lay foundation stones for several others, according to Visakhapatnam port chairman M.T Krishnababu.
Briefing the media on the minister's visit here on Monday, Krishnababu said several major projects had been taken up in recent years in the port under the public-private partnership (PPP) model and also several infrastructure projects improving road connectivity to the port.
The minister would inaugurate two new post panamax rail-mounted quay cranes and equipment in the Visakhapatnam container limited on Friday afternoon (Rs 150 crores), and also the upgraded and modernised iron ore handling complex by the Essar group (Rs 580 crores), and also inaugurate West Quay 7 and 8 berths constructed at a cost of Rs 243 crores.
The minister would lay foundation stones for several projects being taken up under the Bharatmala such as the Sabbavaram to Sheelanagar road project at a cost of Rs 549 crores, the six-laning of Anandapuram to Anakapalle section of NH-5 (new NH-16) at a cost of Rs 2013 crores, and several others.
Krishnababu said the chairmen of the 12 major ports in the country and senior NHAI officials would participate in the review meeting to be conducted by the minister earlier on Friday.
Anit Dixit, the regional officer of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), also spoke.
