The problems in the National Democratic Alliance’s Bihar chapter has taken a new turn over the controversy sparked by Giriraj Singh — Cabinet Minister in Narendra Modi government — who passed remarks against political leaders participating in Iftar parties.

The relationship between both the parties had strained after the Janata Dal (United)’s decision not to join Modi’s Cabinet after it was denied three posts, including a Cabinet Ministry, in the council as demanded. The BJP was ready to give just one berth to the JD(U), which has 16 seats.

In a sharp statement made on Wednesday, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said those who make unnecessary comments to remain in limelight have ‘no religion’.

“I will not react to what he (Giriraj Singh) said. Some people, in order to remain in limelight, have developed a habit to say unnecessary things.

“Such people have no religion as every religion preaches respect and love for each other,” he said after attending Eid celebrations at a mosque. “I wish people maintain brotherhood and peace across the nation. Everyone should pray for rains in Bihar as the State is likely to face severe drought.

“We all should work together and not use derogatory language against each other. You can follow any religion but every religion preaches respect and love for each other. Those who do opposite of that, have no religion,” Kumar said.

Controversial tweet

On Tuesday, Giriraj Singh had tweeted about the JD(U) chief, his Cabinet colleague and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) supremo Ram Vilas Paswan and his son Chirag Paswan attending Iftar parties.

“How beautiful the pictures would have been if such feasts with fruits were organised during Navaratri, too? Why are we going behind in observing religious festivities and engaging in show-offs?” he had said.

Amit Shah intervenes

BJP President Amit Shah reportedly pulled up Singh for making such comments. Shah reportedly told him to keep away from making controversial remarks.

Singh’s remarks have irked not just the JD(U) and the LJP, but also his party leaders. State’s Deputy Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi said he has been organising Iftaar parties for the last 25 years.

“I have been hosting Iftaar parties for 25 years. I also organise Holi Milan feasts. Those who are taunting do not have the heart to offer a treat to people on Holi… How would they appreciate the catholicity of a Hindu hosting Iftaar party?” Sushil Modi said.
