Gujarat Assembly witnessed uproar by the opposition members of Congress party, who were denied discussion on prevailing water scarcity condition in the state due to delayed monsoon and instead were suspended for a day from the house.

The Speaker Vajubhai Vala on Tuesday afternoon suspended the entire opposition barring its two leaders for disrupting house proceedings by resorting to sloganeering and creating uproar in the house.

The opposition members of the Congress party had demanded suspension of house proceedings under the rule 108 of the Assembly proceedings and instead demanded a debate on prevailing drought-like situation in the state due to delayed monsoon.

But when the Speaker Vala did not allow the debate as demanded by the opposition, several members started shouting slogans and throwing papers on the floor.

The Speaker made repeated appeals to the opposition MLAs for maintaining order in the house and take their seats, but those turned futile. When the MLAs tried to rush to the well and started throwing papers on the floor, the Speaker suspended them for a day and ordered marshals to evict them from the house.

While the leader of opposition Shankersinh Vaghela and former leader of opposition Shaktisinh Gohil were allowed to remain present in the house.

"We had demanded a debate in the house on critical issues like drought, drinking water, fodder, electricity for farmers and migration due to water shortage. But the Speaker has not allowed the debate," Vaghela told media persons outside the Assembly.

"This BJP government does not understand the urgency of the present situation. The government has not done any planning to cope up with the drought," he said.

As on June 30 Gujarat had received only 3 per cent of its normal rainfall in the month of June. Lack of timely rain is adversely affecting sowing of kharif crops including cotton and groundnut.
