At a time, when the global automobile players are looking at the State for their investment destinations, the Gujarat government has set an ambitious target to increase the share of automotive industries in the overall engineering production from current 3.7 per cent to 10 per cent by 2020.

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said this at the inauguration of the Value Chain Summit organised by Automotive Component Manufacturers Association (ACMA) at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar on Friday.

The State's installed capacity of over 10 lakh vehicle units per annum will surpass that of top car manufacturing states such as Haryana and Tamil Nadu in the next 3-4 years, the ACMA leaders said.

"Besides being a manufacturing hub, Gujarat has emerged as an auto hub. There are 30 automotive clusters set up in Gujarat. In order to make skilled workforce available to these automotive companies, there is Japan India Institute of Manufacturing is set up in Mehsana. Also, there is a centre of excellence with support from Siemens operational at PDPU in Gandhinagar. Efforts are on to make it an international automobile centre of excellence," said Rupani.

He further stated that State has attracted investments from known automobile players such as Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Ford, Honda Motorcycles and Scooters, besides leading ancillary players such as Apollo Tyres, MRF, CEAT and they have contributed in creating employment in the State.

The two-day Summit with the objective of creating a robust automotive ecosystem in the state has Over 150 Indian auto component manufacturers to exhibit their products & solutions for Gujarat based original equipment makers (OEMs).
