The Centre is planning to set up the country’s first medical devices park in Gujarat. The move is aimed at encouraging medical devices industry under the Make in India mission.

At the foundation stone laying ceremony of the ₹500-crore campus of National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) in Gandhinagar, Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers Ananth Kumar announced the Centre’s plans to set up the country's first medical device park in Gujarat.

According to the Minister, India exports medicines to about 200 countries. “But we are still dependent on other countries for medical devices. Under the Make in India mission, we want to make India self-sufficient in the field of medical devices. Our ministry is planning to set up a Medical Devices Park in Gujarat,” he said.

The proposed medical devices park will have ‘Centre of Excellence’ in which research for medical device will be conducted. “The new institution will emerge as a vibrant research and development centre dedicated in the field of medical devices,” the Minister said.

Addressing the gathering, Kumar also mentioned that Gandhinagar will become the centre of drug discovery.

Also, the Centre is planning to expand Central Institute of Plastic Engineering and Technology (CIPET) campus at Sanand soon after receiving additional land from the State government. Around 12,000 students would get training in plastic engineering following the expansion of CIPET in the State.

The Minister also promised a Pharma Park in the State.

For NIPER-Ahmedabad campus, the State government has allocated 60 acres of land. The campus will be coming up with an estimated budget of ₹500 crores.

“NIPER Ahmedabad started functioning since the year 2007 and through its innovations, research and ability to generate skilled pharma professionals, has marked its presence globally” Kiran Kalia, Director, NIPER-Ahmedabad said. The campus is likely to be ready by 2017.
