Former Prime Minister and Janata Dal Secular (JDS) supremo, Deve Gowda, called on the business community in Karnataka to have trust in the present political set-up. Addressing the 41st Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Bangalore Chamber of Industry and Commerce (BCIC), Gowda invited the business community, both domestic and international, to invest in Karnataka.

He further assured that “doing business” with the new JDS-Congress coalition government will be easy and time-bound. BCIC’s AGM attracted over 350 industry leaders. He said he would ensure the new coalition government drastically prunes the ‘ease of doing business’ parameters, with new policy initiatives.

Gowda said “I earnestly appeal to all investors, both domestic and international businessmen, to establish or expand your business entities in Karnataka. I assure a corruption-free and hands-on government to support all your business needs including surplus power, quick land allotment and hassle-free administrative procedures.”

Citing his own administrative acumen when he was the Prime Minister for a short period of 18 months, Gowda said he was responsible for several new path-breaking policies including in telecom, information technology and civil aviation and similar initiatives would be taken up in Karnataka in the coming days.

He said, “Doing Business in Karnataka will improve radically under the new coalition government. The government will introduce investment-friendly policies, without any hurdles. Have trust in the present political set-up. Come and invest in Karnataka”.

Taking over as the new president of BCIC, Kishore Alva said as an initial kick-start “we want the state government to at least create a traffic-free corridor from the international airport to the seat of power i.e. Vidhana Soudha and also take up development and beautification of Hebbal Lake, which is the gateway to Bengaluru”. These two projects, he said, would immediately create a brand equity for Bengaluru city.

Several speakers, including Prof Vasanthi Srinivasan, IIM-Bangalore; Harish Bhat, Tata Brand Custodian; Dr. Anand Deshpande, Founder and CMD, Persistent Systems; and Praveen Kumar, MD, JP Morgan Chase, shared their thoughts on improving the business ecosystem in the state.
