The Hyderabad-based research institute, the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, which played a crucial role in developing the bulk drug industry in Hyderabad, will also assist the pharma industry in Andhra Pradesh, according to Director S Chandrasekhar.

He was speaking to reporters here on Monday after conducting a business meeting with local entrepreneurs at the Andhra University.

“Institutes such as ours have a specific focus on product-oriented, industrial research. It may be of more immediate relevance to the industry. We would like to help the industry, especially the small and medium ones, in Andhra Pradesh, particularly in the pharma sector,” he said.

He said that in sectors such as pharma it would not be possible for the small and medium entrepreneurs to invest much on R&D, and therefore the role of the research institutes becomes crucial.

“We can help the local industry by tying up with universities such as Andhra University. The pharma industry in particular has a great future in AP, especially near Visakhapatnam. The AP Government is also keen on promoting the industry and the IICT will also do its bit,” Chandrasekhar added.

He said the objective should to provide quality pharma products to the public at affordable prices and it should be possible to substitute some of the products now being imported from China.

Chandrasekhar said the business meet here was a great success as many small and medium entrepreneurs as well as the big units participated in it. It would be followed up with suitable action, he promised.
