As many as 56,211 people tested positive for novel coronavirus during the last 24 hours in the country, taking the total active caseload in India to 5,40,720, a Health Ministry statement said on Tuesday.
During the same period, nearly 5.83 lakh beneficiaries received vaccine shots across the country, pushing up the cumulative vaccinations since the launch of the inoculation drive on January 16 to more than6.11 crore.
On the day India celebrated Holi, Maharashtra reported 31,643 cases of Covid-19, while Punjab registered 2,868 fresh cases. Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu are among the other States wherethe number of new Covid-19 cases was over 2,000.
There were 271 new Covid-19 deaths during the last 24 hours, taking the total death toll since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,62,114.
