Indigenisation is a top priority for the Indian Navy and every possible effort will be made to partner with the domestic industry, but it is necessary for the industry to maintain stringent quality standards to meet the navy’s needs, said Vice-Admiral Satish Soni, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command.

Indigenisation plan Addressing an interactive session with the local industry organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry here on Monday, Soni said, “There will be many opportunities opening up for the domestic industry and an indigenisation plan has been announced recently to make the industry aware of the requirements of the navy. The industries here and elsewhere should carefully study it, as it is in the public domain, and design products to meet our needs.”

He said that even the MSMEs could meet the requirements of the navy on their own or in collaboration with bigger units. The private sector was also playing a crucial role in the endeavour, he added.

Soni said the “blue economy” would play a greater role in future as the resources on the earth are fast getting depleted. There would be greater reliance on the seas and marine resources.

Fleet Review He said the International Fleet Review would be held here in February and “it is a great opportunity for us to showcase Visakhapatnam.”

The IFR was first held in Mumbai in 2001 and now it is Visakhapatnam’s turn. The navies of several countries will also participate in it.

“It will be a memorable event for the Navy, the public of the city and also for the industry,” Soni said.

In response to queries, he said he was in favour of greater interaction with the industry and for holding more trade fairs.

“But the Eastern Naval Command here has to focus on the operational side. Interaction with the industry, though very important, is not our primary concern. The industry should be in touch with the indigenisation cell at naval headquarters. However, the issues raised here will be communicated to the cell,” he said.
