Following the BJP winning the trust vote in Maharashtra with the NCP abstaining from voting, the Congress on Wednesday questioned the former’s “double standards”.
The Congress asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to explain his party’s attitude towards the NCP, a UPA ally.
Congress general secretary Shakeel Ahmed recalled that during the Maharashtra Assembly poll campaign, Modi had termed the NCP a ‘Naturally Corrupt Party’.
“He should tell the people if he had changed his perception about the NCP,” Ahmed said, asking Modi to make his stand clear on the issue of corruption.
When asked about the NCP’s change of stand, Ahmed said the party was in a “secular” alliance for 15 years. “We do not know why they have decided to align with the BJP,” he said.
The Congress leader, however, said the NCP has been invited to attend the international seminar as part of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s birth anniversary celebrations.
“We had invited all parties who believe in secularism and inclusive ideologies,” he added.
The decision to help the BJP to form government in Maharashtra has created problems within the NCP too. NCP leaders from various States have reportedly questioned the move.
