Dacoits on Saturday night looted a container truck carrying cigarettes of the ITC on the National Highway near Devipuram in Sabbavaram mandal of Visakhapatnam district and the valued is estimated at Rs 5-6 crores, according to the police.
The container truck was going from the warehouse of the ITC, Howrah in West Bengal to Hyderabad, loaded with the high-end brand of Gold Flake King Size.
According to the police, the container truck was overtaken by a lorry near Devipuram and was forced to stop. Seven to eight persons, armed with rods and knives, alighted from the lorry and beat up the driver of the container truck, Mohammed Aslam Khan.
“They then tied up his hands and legs and threw him near the bushes near DIET college on the Visakhapatnam-Anakapalle NH, and drove both the container truck and the lorry to a secluded spot near AS Peta under Kasimkota Police Station,” said the DSP of Anakapalle D. Purushottam.
At AS Peta they transferred the cigarettes cartons from the container to the lorry and drove away.
The lorry driver lodged a complaint with Sabbavaram police on Sunday morning.
