The Jammu and Kashmir Government will expedite the rehabilitation of Dal Lake inhabitants as part of its conservation programme for the endangered water body.

Minister for Urban Development and Local Bodies Nawang Rigzin Jora had chaired a high-level meeting here yesterday to streamline the process of rehabilitation of Dal dwellers, an official spokesman said.

“It was decided that ration cards possessed by the inhabitants of the lake would become the basis for the verification of family strength for the purpose of allotment of plots at Rakh-e-Arth,” the spokesman said.

He said officials of the Lakes and Waterways Development Authority and Revenue Department will complete the process of verification immediately.

The high-level committee will meet twice every month to clear maximum number of cases by March 2014, the spokesman said.

Jora later visited Shanpora to inspect the engineering wetland that is spread over five hectares of land at the mouth of Meerak Shah Channel for bio-filtration of water from the catchment area. The project is expected to be completed at a cost of Rs 3.5 crore.
