The much awaited Chennai Metro rail passenger service will be inaugurated by the Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday, according to government sources.
She will inaugurate the first phase of the ₹14,000-crore project from Alandur to Koyambedu via video conference from the State Secretariat, sources said.
The 10.1-km elevated stretch has five stations in between, and will take less than 20 minutes to travel with the train stopping for 30 seconds in each station.
The line will be extended to the Chennai airport from Alandur in the next stage.
Alstom has manufactured the air-conditioned coaches — first at its facility in Brazil and later at Sri City at Tada in Andhra Pradesh. Each train will have a capacity to carry 1,276 ýpassengers with a seating capacity for 276 and standing 1,000.
