Elections to the 87-member Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly can be held later this year after the conclusion of the Amarnath yatra, the Election Commission said late on Tuesday.

“The Commission will keep monitoring the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, taking inputs from all necessary quarters, and after the conclusion of the Amarnath yatra, will announce the schedule for the conduct of Assembly elections in J&K,” the Commission said in a statement.

The yatra, which will begin on July 1, is set to conclude on August 15.

At the time of announcing the general elections in March this year, the Commission had set up a three-member committee to see when elections to the State Assembly could be held. At that time, the Commission did not say whether the Assembly elections will be held along with the multi-phased elections to Lok Sabha seats in the State.

The Commission had cited several reasons, including the fact that more personnel will be needed for providing security for those contesting the Assembly elections along with those contesting the Lok Sabha polls, for not holding simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly polls in J&K.

Now, it is likely that J&K will go to polls along with States like Maharashtra, where elections to the State legislatures are due to be held this year.
