Kala Omkumar, a renowned ayurvedic practitioner in Bengaluru, plans to launch an Ayurvedic Oncology Research Institute with the aim of tackling the rising incidence of cancer.

The main aim of the institute is to help improve the quality of life of aged cancer patients or those suffering from the disease in an advanced stage and who are unable to sustain treatments such as radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgery, Kala said. “There have been several cases of polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD), the industry term for ovarian cancer, with only Ayurvedic medicines, without even the need for surgery,” added Kala.

For this purpose, Kala has identified an area of about 5 lakh sq.ft. about 100 km from the Bengaluru city limits, in natural surroundings.

Further, Kala intends to develop about 65 unique herbariums of 4,000 sq.ft each, consisting of a mixture of organic anti-oxidant fruit plants and herbs which can rejuvenate and remove debility in cancer patients. Kala has already got 30 such fruit trees planted in each herbarium. Several Simarouba trees, the seeds of which are used in the making of edible oils, have also been planted.

“Ayurveda is the science of healthy living and also the science of preventive medicine, which helps in management of the deadly side-effects of invasive procedures and chemotherapy procedures in the present treatment of cancer, through herbal medicine and diet,” said Kala.

Kala’s effort is driven in an area where research can still be done on the curative aspect of cancer through Ayurvedic medicines. “This is an area that I have been working on since 2004,” she said, adding that the revenue paper work is yet to be completed. At this juncture, Kala is on the look out for corporates or HNIs who can sponsor and adopt individual herbariums, which bear a maintenance cost of Rs 4,000 each month.

Already, S N Ramesh, a renowned architect who has built three resorts, namely, ‘Guhantara’; ‘Jhari’ and ‘Shilandhara’ has offered to provide a cottage in each of the herbariums to the sponsors at cost price.
