Close on the heels of some disgruntled MLAs returning to its fold, the ruling Congress party has called its legislative party (CLP) meet here on Friday.

The CLP is expected to be a public show of strength to send out a message that ‘all is well’ in the party.

The actual strength of the ruling Congress-Janata Dal-Secular coalition (JD-S) and the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party, which is yet to stop efforts to lure rebel MLAs from the ruling coalition, is expected to emerge after the CLP meeting.

The Congress has issued a whip to all its MLAs to attend and also warned of disciplinary action against who abstain.

‘Accommodating rebels’

The Congress may also ask a few senior ministers to relinquish posts to accommodate rebels. There is also a strategy of asking Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, who is from JD(S), to address the CLP meet to pacify the agitated Congress MLAs.

Joint-fight in LS polls

Chief Minister Kumaraswamy on Thursday stressed that the JD(S)-Congress ties were strong and the parties will fight the upcoming Lok Sabha polls together.

Refuting the charges of the BJP and its President BS Yeddyurappa that he is trying to wean away BJP MLAs, Kumaraswamy said, “there is no truth in it”. He added: “They have confined their MLAs to a hotel, while the ruling coalition legislators are free.”

On drought in State

Lashing out at Yeddyurappa, the Chief Minister said when nearly 150 taluks in the State are reeling under severe drought, they [BJP MLAs] are relaxing at a hotel in Delhi.
