CPI(M) member PP Vinodan, who had earlier been an RSS activist, was killed in a midnight bomb attack at Panur in Kerala’s Kannur district.
For decades, the area has been notorious for violent confrontations between the RSS and the CPI(M).
A gang threw a country bomb at Vinodan on a village road when he was returning home from a temple festival on Wednesday midnight. Accusing a gang belonging to the RSS of committing the murder, the CPI(M) called a hartal in Thalassery taluk, under which the Panur area falls. Political violence has been in the air in the area for months because of the stand-off between RSS and CPI(M) cadres. On Thrusday, senior CPI(M) leader Pinarayi Vijayan warned the RSS that it cannot eliminate the CPI(M) through violence.
In 2013, hundreds of RSS and BJP activists had joined the CPI(M) at public events organised by the latter in Kannur district. Many of those who joined the CPI(M) reportedly returned to the RSS-BJP after Narendra Modi became Prime Minister.
