The Kerala Government today asked the Centre to take steps to check import of broken grade cashew from Vietnam and Brazil, holding that its large-scale flow into the domestic market had affected the sector in the state.

In a letter to the Commerce Minister, Anand Sharma, the state’s Industries Minister, P K Kunhalikutty said the cashew industry in Kerala was facing a crisis due to concessions granted by the Centre.

He requested the Centre to consider the request of the Cashew Manufacturers Association to impose duty on import of cashew kernel.

Kunhalikutty said that the crisis in the sector would affect the livelihood of more than 3 lakh women employed in the sector.
