The police have arrested four Central Industrial Security Force constables in connection with the June 10 night’s events at the Kozhikode international airport. The police indicated that more CISF personnel could be arrested soon for riot-like behaviour and causing damage to public property following the events that led to the death of a CISF constable.

Earlier, the police registered a case of culpable homicide against CISF sub-inspector, Sitaram Chaudhury, a bullet from whose pistol was found to have killed his colleague SS Yadav. He has also been charged with assaulting on a complaint by a fireman who is in hospital.

The events at the airport on Wednesday had reportedly started with the rough handling of a Fire Force staffer while subjecting him to security check by the CISF. The fireman reportedly informed his colleagues who immediately arrived in an ambulance and jeep to question the rude behaviour. This led to a scuffle and in the melee the CISF constable was shot to death. Though exactly who shot the constable was not yet clear, tests have proved that the bullet had been fired from the SI’s pistol. CCTV footage showed the SI pointing his pistol at the firemen.

Nine Fire and Rescue Force personnel at the airport had already been booked for the incidents. Two dozen CISF personnel are also facing charges of causing damage to public property at the airport which has suffered a total loss of around ₹50 lakh. The CISF authorities have reportedly ordered mass transfer of nearly 50 constables to Bengaluru and Chennai as a disciplinary measure. Deputy Commandant Daniel Dhanraj, who headed the CISF unit, has been taken off his charge. The Centre, which has viewed the Wednesday events seriously, is expected to take more disciplinary measures. The CISF unit at the airport has been often been alleged of rough handling of passengers as well as other airport staff during security check.
