The Opposition has demanded that the Centre promulgate an Ordinance to nullify the Supreme Court order on the eviction of over one million adivasis and traditional forest dwellers from forests. The parties have accused the Centre and State governments of failing to implement the Forest Dwellers Act.
The CPI(M) demanded that the Centre issue an Ordinance to protect all adivasis and traditional forest dwellers from eviction. “According to latest figures, of a total of 42.19 lakh claims received across the country, only 18.89 lakh or just over 40 per cent claims have been accepted. The rejections are often arbitrary against the recommendations of the gram sabha,” the party said.
