Liquor will become dearer in Bihar with the state government today deciding to increase excise duty upto Rs 5 per litre.

The decision to increase duty on India Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) was taken at a meeting of the state Cabinet presided over by the Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

The Principal Secretary, Cabinet Coordination, Deepak Kumar said here that the excise duty on general beer has been increased to Rs 15 per litre against Rs 10 earlier.

The duty on strong beer would now be Rs 15 against Rs 10 earlier, super strong beer Rs 20 per litre instead of Rs 18 and IMFL Rs 15 a litre as compared to Rs 10 earlier, he said.

The CM had said on numerous occasions that he favoured prohibition but it was not feasible.

He had suggested raising price of liquor to dissuade its excessive use by citizens.
