Aam Aadmi Party supremo Arvind Kejriwal won the New Delhi seat defeating BJP’s Sunil Kumar Yadav.

Kejriwal is all set to return to power for a third term with his party, according to latest results and trends, winning 34 seats and leading in 29 seats.

The Congress, which ruled Delhi for 15 consecutive years under Sheila Dikshit, on Tuesday stared at the prospect of scoring a duck for the second consecutive time in the assembly elections and being reduced to a fringe player in the national capital’s politics.

63 candidates of the Congress also lost their deposits.

The party, which ruled Delhi for 15 years on the trot under former Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, failed to open its account for the second consecutive assembly election in Delhi.

Only three of its candidates — Arvinder Singh Lovely from Gandhi Nagar, Devender Yadav from Badli and Abhishek Dutt from Kasturba Nagar — managed to save their deposits.

Security deposit of a candidate is forfeited if he/she fails to secure one-sixth of the total valid votes cast in a constituency.

Most of Congress candidates got less than 5 per cent of the total votes polled in their respective constituencies.

Delhi Congress chief Shubhash Chopra’s daughter Shivani Chopra, who was the party candidate from Kalkaji, also could not save her deposit.

Former Delhi Assembly Speaker Yoganand Shastri’s daughter Priyanka Singh also forfeited her deposit.

The party’s campaign committee chairman Kirti Azad’s wife, Poonam Azad, lost badly and stood fourth, polling only 2,604

Broom is the poll symbol of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Adami Party.

“Kejriwal was termed as a terrorist. Instead of focusing on local issues, they (BJP) tried to bring in international issues and change people’s minds, but failed.

The people of Delhi have stood firmly behind Kejriwal for his honesty and willingness to work for their betterment,” Thackeray said without taking BJP’s name.

“There were some people who were under the illusion that they are the only ones who love the nation while all political opponents are anti-nationals. The people of Delhi have shown such people their place,” the Shiv Sena chief said. - PTI

With the early trends suggesting a third term for the AAP in Delhi, senior party leader Sanjay Singh said by giving a “massive mandate”, people of the national capital have said that Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is not a terrorist but a staunch nationalist. Despite the BJP using all its might to wrest power in the national capital, the “son of Delhi” won, he said.

The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is leading on 57 seats while the BJP on 13, according to Election Commission (EC).

“The two crore families of Delhi have now said that their son Arvind Kejriwal is not a terrorist but a staunch nationalist. I salute the people of Delhi from (for) giving AAP such a massive mandate,” Singh said in a tweet.

The AAP leader was referring to remarks made by BJP MP Parvesh Verma at a poll rally. Verma had called Kejriwal a “terrorist” over his alleged support to an anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act protest in south Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh.

1.12 pm

Riding on its development agenda, the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party is set for a resounding victory in the Delhi assembly elections to retain power for a third term.

As counting of votes is underway, the AAP was leading in 58 of 70 seats and the BJP in 12, leaving the Congress virtually decimated in a city it had ruled for three consecutive terms under Sheila Dikshit, according to Election Commission figures.

The elections took place in the midst of massive protests in the city and elsewhere over the new citizenship law, the National Register of Citizens and the National Population Register. The BJP faced charges of carrying out a “divisive” campaign to polarise the voters by consistently highlighting the over 50-day demonstration by a group of women in Shaheen Bagh area.

Though BJP’s campaign focused on national security issues, the AAP mainly focused on its achievements in the fields of education, healthcare and infrastructure. The AAP had registered a sensational victory in 2015 by winning 67 seats in a hurricane march that almost wiped out the BJP and the Congress.

According to latest trends, Kejriwal was leading in his New Delhi constituency by over 6,300 votes, while his deputy Manish Sisodia was 754 votes behind BJP’s Ravinder Singh Negi in Patparganj. Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot was leading by 1,115 votes from Najafgarh constituency.

Health Minister Satyendar Jain was leading by 309 votes in Shakur Basti constituency and BJP’s S C Vats was second. Labour Minister Gopal Rai was leading in Babarpur and Food and Civil Supplies Minister Imran Hussain in Ballimaran.

Kejriwal is expected to address party workers and the media later in the day. However, his party workers were upbeat and in celebratory mode. “We have been saying since the beginning that the upcoming polls will be fought on the basis of work done by us... You wait and watch, we will register a massive win,” AAP spokesperson Sanjay Singh told reporters.

“We hope we get such a clear majority that a message goes out that doing Hindu-Muslim politics will not work anymore,” said AAP volunteer Fareen Khan at the party office.

The trends and initial results showed a clear lead for the ruling AAP in the Delhi Assembly as the counting of about 50 per cent votes (nine rounds) is completed. The BJP that claimed that it will win more than 45 seats, however, failed to come somewhere near it, but improved its position compared to the 2015 results.

The AAP is leading in 56 seats and the BJP is leading in 14 seats. It looks like that the Congress is not in a position to make a comeback to the Assembly.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Labour Minister Gopal Rai were leading but Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia was trailing from his Patpatganj constituency. Atishi, who replaced Avtar Singh Kalka in Kalkaji, was trailing initially but surged ahead by over 200 votes by 11.30am. BJP’s Dharambir Singh was close second while Delhi Congress chief Subhash Chopra’s daughter Shivani Chopra was a distant third.

Pandey, who replaced Pankaj Pushkar in Timarpur constituency, was leading with over 5,000 votes. BJP’s Surender Pal Singh was at the second position. AAP’s Durgesh Pathak was trailing by over 6,600 votes in Karawal Nagar, previously held by party rebel Kapil Mishra.

12.24 pm

Proving the exit polls correct, the AAP gained 53.23 percentage of the total votes polled as almost ten rounds of counting was over. The BJP, which got 56.58 per cent votes in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, managed to get just 39.13 per cent votes in the Assembly polls.

This is a clear change from the results of the Lok Sabha where the AAP was pushed to third position, behind the Congress. In Assembly, people reposed their faith with the AAP and the Congress could get just about 4.10 per cent of the votes.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, while the BJP got 56.58 per cent votes and all the seven seats, the Congress got 22.46 per cent votes and came second in all the seven seats. The AAP got just 14.9 per cent votes. and was a poor third in the list. It looked like that the opponents of the BJP saw a chance for Congress improving its position in the Lok Sabha elections, but in the Assembly, the winds turned towards the AAP.

In the 2015 Assembly polls, the AAP had gained 67 seats and 54.3 per cent votes. The BJP managed three seats with 32.3 per cent votes and the Congress got 9.7 per cent votes with no seats. The results show that people stood with the AAP for a campaign based on livelihood issues and the BJP's efforts to polarise the voters citing the anti CAA protests did not succeed. - Our Bureau

The Delhi Assembly election was a fight between “a giant and a pygmy” and the AAP is winning it despite the NDA government using all its might to wrest power in the national capital, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said.

As trends indicated that the Aam Aadmi Party was leading on 56 seats and the BJP on 14, Chowdhury said the people of Delhi voted for development. The Congress party was not leading on any of the 70 constituencies, according to latest trends.

“The common people have decided they will choose either BJP or AAP. It’s a vote for the development agenda. The entire government, along with all its entire machinery, had been deployed in Delhi to win this election. From PM to grassroots workers, it’s been a fight between a giant and a pygmy and the pygmy has won,” he said. - PTI

The Aam Aadmi Party appeared to be heading back to power for a second term in Delhi with the party leading in 52 seats of the 70 and the BJP ahead in 18 as votes for last week’s assembly elections were counted, according to Election Commission figures.

The contest for political power over the national capital was a bipolar one with the Congress nowhere in the reckoning, according to initial trends.

AAP supremo and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was leading in the New Delhi seat by 4,300 seats, while his deputy Manish Sisodia from Patparganj seat was ahead by 102 votes. BJP leader Vijender Gupta, who is also leader of opposition in the Delhi legislative assembly, was trailing by over 1,200 votes from Rohini .

As early celebrations broke out in the AAP headquarters in Rouse Avenue, BJP’s Delhi unit chief Manoj Tiwari asked his party supporters not to lose hope. “There are 27 seats where the difference of votes is between 700 to 1,000,” Tiwari told reporters.

Looking ahead at victory, he said he was not nervous and was ready to take on the responsibilities that a win would bring. “All talk is over. We have to wait for the blessings of the people. I am confident it will be a good day for BJP. We are coming to power in Delhi today. Don’t be surprised if we win 55 seats,” Tiwari said.

Kejriwal, who had led his party to a spectacular win of 67 of 70 seats in 2015, is expected to address party workers and the media later in the day.

The headquarters were decorated with blue and white balloons and big cutouts of Kejriwal were placed in different parts of the office.

Labour Minister and AAP’s Delhi unit convenor Gopal Rai was leading in Badarpur constituency by 1,994 votes. Atishi, AAP’s Kalkaji candidate, who was also instrumental in the transformation of Delhi government schools, was trailing by 190 votes.

While the AAP, of course, put forward Kejriwal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath were among those who extensively campaigned for the BJP.

The Congress, still recovering maybe from the death of its three-time Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit in July last year, got into campaign mode much later. Former prime minister Manmohan Singh and party leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi were among those who campaigned for the Congress. - PTI

Digvijaya Singh raises doubts on EVMs

Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Tuesday raised doubts on EVMs, alleging that no machine having a chip is tamper-proof. He called upon the Election Commission and the Supreme Court to take a fresh look at the use of EVMs in the country.

“No machine (which) has a chip is tamper proof. Also please do for a moment think, why no developed country uses EVM,” Singh said in a tweet. “Would CEC and Hon Supreme Court please have a fresh look on EVM voting in India? We are the largest democracy in the world, we can’t allow some unscrupulous people to hack results and steal the mandate of 1.3 billion people.

“If they match the votes in the counting unit. Declare the result. If they don’t match then count the ballots of all polling booths in the assembly. It would convince every one and save time also as this has been the consistent argument of CEC in favour of EVM,” the Congress leader said. - PTI

Counting of votes begins

The counting began at 8 am and will be held in multiple rounds, Delhi Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Ranbir Singh said. “Elaborate security arrangements have been put in place. The exercise is being carried out as per the laid-down procedures of the Election Commission,” Singh said.

Tight security arrangements have been put in place at various centres across Delhi, he said.

“The postal ballots will be counted first till around 8.30 am and then the votes cast through electronic voting machines will be counted,” the senior official said. “The counting centres are spread across 21 locations, spanning the 70 constituencies. Each centre has several counting halls, equal to the number of constituencies falling in that district,” he said.

Each EVM consists of a ballot unit (BU), a controls units (CU) and a voter-verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT.)

After counting of votes through CUs from every assembly constituency, five VVPATs will be randomly selected and they will be counted, the official said.

The counting centres are located across 11 districts, including at CWG Sports Complex in east Delhi, NSIT Dwarka in west Delhi, Meerabai Institute of Technology and G B Pant Institute of Technology in southeast Delhi, Sir CV Raman ITI, Dheerpur in central Delhi, and Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Bawana in north Delhi.

Nearly 24 hours after the polling ended in Delhi, the Election Commission on Sunday announced that the final voter turnout was 62.59 per cent, five per cent less than 2015, and asserted that it followed the laid down process to compile data, after the AAP questioned the “delay“. - PTI

Can the AAP expand its focus beyond Delhi to the rural areas?

We’re a predominantly rural nation and 830 million Indians — nearly 70 per cent of the population — live outside the towns and cities, the 2011 Census shows. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) — whether it wins or loses Delhi — could stake its claim as the first strongly urban-focussed party that looks to address the needs of India’s urban masses.

If the AAP’s a Delhi-centric urban party, can it spread its wings beyond the city?
