A low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, which triggered rains and thundershowers in many parts of Odisha today, is likely to cause heavy rains in some places by tomorrow.

“The low pressure area now lies over the northern parts of the central Bay of Bengal and the adjoining north Bay of Bengal. The system is likely to be a well-marked low pressure area during the next 48 hours,” the MeT office here said.

Under its impact, rains and thundershowers are likely to occur at many coastal parts of the State and at a few places in interior areas of the State in the next 24 hours. Heavy rainfall is also likely to occur at one or two places in the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri and Ganjam during the next 24 hours, it said.

Many areas of the State, particularly coastal region, have been experiencing rains and thundershowers since yesterday under the influence of the low pressure, bringing much needed relief from the scorching heat.
