Lutyens’ Delhi is set to get a facelift with demolition and reconstruction of 516 government bungalows.
"The bungalows were built in 1930s and are in need of repair. We plan to break them down and rebuild them with the same design to maintain the heritage ambience,” VK Gupta, Director General, Central Public Works Department, said.
The project will cost ₹3,000 crore and will be implemented in phases over the next 20-30 years. However, the proposal has to be cleared by the new house committee, an official added.
The CPWD is also considering razing about 490 flats in North and South Avenue and building Lutyens’ style bungalows there.
"The proposal is under consideration as the flats are over 50 years old and if they are demolished to build bungalows, there will be fewer accommodations for members of parliament than at present,” Gupta said.
Meanwhile, 25 out of about 60 bungalows have been vacated by Congress leaders in Lutyens’ and have been allotted to new ministers. The ministers are expected to occupy the houses in 2-3 weeks as repair work is under way.
