Jailed Trinamool Congress MLA and former minister, Madan Mitra, will be the party's candidate from the Kamarhati constituency in North 24 Parganas.
Madan Mitra is the sitting MLA from the constituency.
Accused for his complicity in the Saradha scam, Mitra been in jail for over an year now. He was the Transport and Sports minister but stepped down following ill-health and repeated denial of bail.
The announcement of the jailed leader's candidature was made by Trinamool Congress MP (from the Dum Dum constituency) and senior leader Sougata Roy during a (party) workers' meet yesterday at Kamarhati.
"Madan Mitra will be party's representative from the Kamarhati constituency again (his existing seat). Gear up to ensure a victory for him by an even higher margin," Roy apparently told workers.
Incidentally, party supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, has so far maintained that Mitra, one of her confidantes, is a "victim of political conspiracy" and refused to categorise him as an accused in the multi-crore scam.
