In a significant move ahead of the Assembly polls, Maharashtra Government on Monday announced closure of 44 out of the 166 toll plazas across Maharashtra.
The announcement was made on the floor of the Legislative Assembly by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.
He said that 34 toll plazas set up by Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and ten by Public Works Department (PWD) would be soon shut down.
The contractors operating them would be given a compensation of Rs 306 crore, said Pawar, who is also the State Finance Minister.
