West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo, Mamata Banerjee, on Thursday, expressed concern over rising incidents of intolerance in the country.
In an attack against the Centre and “the ruling party in power”, Banerjee questioned how “they” can dictate what people of the country “wear or eat”.
Blaming the Centre, Banerjee pointed out that on the one hand they celebrate Constitution Day, and on the other they profile people based on religion.
“Aamir Khan has said what he felt as an Indian. Who are you to tell him to leave the country? It belongs to everyone,” she added.
Addressing a rally on communal harmony organised by prominent minority leader Siddiqullah Chowdhury, the West Bengal Chief Minister said: “The Constitution champions the ideals of justice, liberty, equality and fraternity, unity and integrity of the nation.”
Slamming her detractors who were questioning why she was attending this event, she said questions are not raised when she attends functions of the Ramakrishna Mission or Bharat Sevasram Sangha.
“I visit churches on Christmas and also attend functions of Bharat Sevasram Sangha. I attend Guru Nanak’s birthday celebrations. Why cannot I attend a Muslim event?” Banerjee questioned.
