Mangalore University will come out with a sports policy soon, according to K Byrappa, Vice-Chancellor of the university.

Addressing presspersons in Mangaluru on Thursday, he said that the university has constituted a committee to formulate a sports policy for the university. It includes experts from Karnataka and other states.

Kishor Kumar, Physical Director of the university, said the university conducts 27 university-level sports events every year. The last sports policy of the university was framed in 1982. Many changes have taken place various sports events after that.

Considering this, an expert committee has been constituted to frame a new sports policy for the university. He hoped that the university would come out with a sports policy in four months. The new sports policy should be in place before the beginning of the new academic year, he said.

Stating that the university is giving importance for sports related activities, Byrappa said a 400-metre athletic track is getting ready at the Konaje campus of the university. Added to this, an indoor stadium has also been planned at the university.

The university is also planning to construct a fitness centre and swimming pool for the benefit of the students, he said.

Talent search will be done at college level to identify sports talents under the jurisdiction of the university.

Byrappa said that plans are there to earmark one seat in each postgraduate department, exclusively for talents from the field of sports. Till now, talents from the field of sports had to compete with talents from NCC and NSS to get a seat in postgraduate courses, he said.
