Representatives of 17 Opposition parties were present when their candidate, former Speaker Meira Kumar, filed the nomination papers for the Presidential elections, here on Wednesday. The leaders reiterated that the fight is ideological and Meira said she would launch her campaign from Sabarmati Ashram on Friday.

Congress chief Sonia Gandhi said the Opposition will fight an ideological battle. “For us, it is a battle of ideologies, principles and truth, and we will fight it,” she said.

The 72-year-old said her fight is based on democratic values, inclusiveness in society, freedom of the press and individuals, end of poverty, transparency and destruction of caste structure.

The former Speaker will visit Bihar, her home State, on July 6. State Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who is an ally of the Congress, has decided to support her opponent Ram Nath Kovind in the July 17 elections.

Kumar, 72, who filed her papers with Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and former prime minister Manmohan Singh by her side, will launch her campaign from Sabarmati Ashram in Gujarat on June 30.

Sonia Gandhi and other top Congress and Opposition leaders were amongst those who proposed and seconded Kumar’s nomination.

“For us, it is a battle of ideologies, principles and truth and we will fight it,” Gandhi said after the nomination filing.

CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, who was also present, said the fight is is not a ’Dalit versus Dalit’ contest but a fight to safeguard and strengthen the Indian republic.
