As many as 246 low-lying areas have been identified in Bengaluru, where flooding occurs every year during monsoons.

Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara, who is also Bengaluru Development Minister, held a review meeting of monsoon preparedness on Wednesday.

Addressing reporters after the meeting, he said he has instructed the officials to take precautionary measures to ensure that the city is not crippled by heavy rainfall. Drains have been cleared of silt and garbage to prevent flooding.

The meeting was attended by BBMP officials who apprised the Minister of the low-lying areas, stormwater drains and roads that get clogged every rainy season. Despite the efforts by the BBMP, heavy rains had created havoc and caused troubles last year.

“The process of clearing encroached drains is being carried out. Each zone has been mapped and the clearing process in water-clogged areas are being carried out on a priority basis. Out of the 840-km stormwater drain network in the city, silt has been cleared for 400 km and preventive wall has been built. Work on rest of the drains is under way,” he said.
