A fire incident occurred at the blast furnace- two on Friday in the Visakhapatnam steel plant, according to a press release by the plant authorities.

Slag started flowing through the tuyers (pipe which supplies the air blast to the blast furnace for combustion) from blast furnace-2 of the steel plant around 1.30 p.m. The slag is supposed to be tapped from the tap holes. However, due to mal-functioning of tuyers, the slag came through tuyers on to the platform, causing fire at 10 feet height platform level.

Fire tenders were rushed to the spot and put into action to extinguish the fire at the platform level. After efforts by the CISF fire personnel and the employees the fire was put out. The blast furnace-2 was immediately taken into off-blast mode, adds the release.

P Madhusudan, the CMD, said no one was injured and the situation was under control. All necessary steps would be taken to revive the production at blast furnace-2  in 2 – 3 days. He said the other units in the plant were functioning normally.
