The total value of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s movable and immovable assets has grown by little over 51 per cent during his five-year term. He filed his nomination on Friday, seeking a second Lok Sabha term from Varanasi.

According to the affidavit that formed part of his nomination papers, the total value of movable and immovable assets was shown as over ₹2.51 crore, as compared with ₹1.65 crore as shown in the 2014 affidavit. The increase is mainly due to higher fixed deposits and life insurance policy, beside some claim (projected) from the Income Tax Department and the Prime Minister’s Office. Modi declared that he does not own any motor vehicle.

However, the value of his gold rings has come down. In the 2019 affidavit, similar to before, he has mentioned Jashodaben as his spouse, but stated that value of her movable and immovable assets is ‘not known.’

Modi said that he has cleared SSC examination from Gujarat in 1967, completed his graduation from Delhi University in 1978, and Master of Arts (MA) from Gujarat University in 1983. There is no criminal case pending against him.

Filing papers

Before filing his nomination, Modi paid a visit to the Assi Ghat, followed by an interaction with booth level workers. In his address, Modi said that more than working for Kashi’s change, Kashi has changed him.

Modi Kashi main badlav karne wala kaun hota hai! Jahan swayam Baba Vishwanath viraje hain, wahan unki marji ke bina kuch ho sakta ha kya? ” (Who is Modi to bring change in Kashi? At the place where Lord Vishwanath himself lives, can something be done without his wish?).

He asked the voters not to be complacent about his victory and ensure higher voting. His next stop was the Kaal Bhairav temple. After offering prayers, he moved to the Rifle Club Collectorate to file his nomination.

After arriving at the venue, Modi greeted one of the proposers, Annapurna Shukla (adopted daughter of Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya). “I blessed him. I feel lucky to be his proposer,” she said. His other proposers were businessman Subhas Gupta, Jagdish Chaudhury from ‘Dom Raja’ family, and Ram Shankar Patel from the Patel Dharam Shala.
