The Union Ministry of Textile has approved in principle establishment of National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) at Sagalee in Papum Pare district of Arunachal Pradesh.

Union Minister for Textiles Dr K S Rao stated this during a meeting with Chief Minister Nabam Tuki at New Delhi yesterday, officials said here on Wednesday.

Rao said that NIFT, which is a premier fashion designing, management and technology institute of the country, would be set up soon in Sagalee to cater to the students from different parts of the region.

The Director General of NIFT would be entrusted with the responsibility of working out the modalities with the State government in this regard.

The development comes in the wake of the policy level thrust of the chief minister to create centres of national excellence in the state to increase the scope of employability and world class training to students.

In the meeting, several issues related to the development of relevant sectors like handloom, handicrafts and sericulture in the state were also discussed.

State minister for Industries & Textiles Tapang Taloh, who was also present in the meeting, emphasised on development of a cluster based approach for the benefit of the local people.

The Union Ministry of Textiles would be sending a team immediately to assess the sericulture potential of the state and formulate a long term plan for central assistance to the state.

The union minister also told the chief minister that he would give schemes for entrepreneurship development and training for local artisans of the state.
