For the second consecutive day, the number of new coronavirus positive cases in Tamil Nadu crossed 2,000 on Thursday. With 2,141 persons testing positive, the total number of cases in the state has increased to 52,334. However, with 1,017 persons discharged, the total number of active cases stands at 23,065.
In Chennai, 1,373 persons tested positive, while Tiruvallur district reported 123 cases, Chengalpattu 115 , and Kancheepuram 55 cases.
The state reported 49 Covid deaths today, taking the number of fatalities due to the virus to 625, data from the Health Ministry said.
A total number of 26,736 samples were tested.
Meanwhile, the state government has appointed monitoring officers in 33 districts to contain the spread of the virus. Officers have already been appointed for Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts, while a separate team has been appointed for this purpose in Chennai.
In a bid to flatten the infection curve, Chennai and its neighbouring districts will head into an intense lockdown for 12 days starting Friday..
