The Odisha State Election Commission (SEC) today announced September 19 the date for holding elections to 91 urban local bodies.

This was announced here by the SEC Ajit Kumar Tripathy at a press conference ending speculations about the ensuing urban polls.

The entire election process would be completed with election of Vice-Chairman posts on October 22, 2013, he said adding that model code of conduct would remain effective from August 16 till October 22.

Besides, 19 urban bodies (where elections to be held), the model code of conduct would also be applicable for the rural areas close to the urban body jurisdictions. “Any programme, policy, project and others likely to influence the voters in urban areas will be prohibited,” Tripathy said.

Tripathy, however, said that relief and rescue operation, if required, would continue or start despite implementation of model code of conduct.

The SEC also informed that the Central Government had been informed not to announce any Odisha specific programme, project and others which would influence the voters in the urban polls.

Stating that counting of votes would be held on September 20, Tripathy said election for chairman’s post to be conducted on September 30.

The elections would be held in 32 municipalities, 58 Notified Area Councils (NACs) and one MC.

For the first time, 50 percent seats will be reserved for the women candidates while SEBC candidates will get 27 percent reservation.
