The Union Petroleum Minister has proposed a skill development centre in hydrocarbon sector for Mangaluru.

Inaugurating the polypropylene unit of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) in Mangaluru on Sunday, Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas (independent charge), said that there is a requirement of 136 skills in hydrocarbon sector from exploration to delivery point.

Stating that Mangaluru has huge presence of hydrocarbon-based industries and other infrastructure such as port, airport, and rail connectivity, he said that a world-class skill development centre for hydrocarbon sector will be set up in Mangaluru based on the parameters of Skill Development Ministry.

Stating that MRPL will be the anchor for the skill development centre, he said it will be coordinating with all other departments. The cooperation of the Karnataka Government will also be taken for this initiative.

A consultant will be appointed to look into the areas for establishing a skill development centre and to submit a report on this, he said.

Later when presspersons wanted to know the timeframe for the establishment of the skill development centre, he declined to give the timeframe and said he is committed to his assurance on the skill development centre in Mangaluru.

On the plans to lay a natural gas pipeline from Kochi to Mangaluru, he said the Government has discussed this matter with the Kerala government. The Government is also looking at other alternatives such as bringing a spur line from Gokak-Bidadi gas pipeline and establishing a floating gas terminal in New Mangalore Port.

When told that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed among various public sector undertakings and the New Mangalore Port to set up an LNG terminal a few years ago, he said he does not know about the MoU.
