The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) has signed an agreement with Goa-based Zuari Agro Chemicals Ltd (ZACL) to convert the municipal waste into city compost.

The agreement facilitated by the Union Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD) comes on the back of the Union Cabinet decision passed in January on the promotion of city compost. A market development assistance of ₹1,500 per tonne of city compost would be paid to the fertilizer marketing companies.

The agreement was signed in the presence of S Riyaz, Deputy GM, Marketing, ZACL, D Tendulkar, Chief Manager, ZACL, and Anil Prakash, Associate Director, Project Management Unit, Swachh Bharat.

The Department of Fertilizer had earlier notified the tagging of lead fertilizer marketing companies from across the country with compost manufacturers, to enter into agreements to market the city compost.

Under the agreement, CCP would ensure delivery of municipal waste to ZACL and review the infrastructure and machinery available to ensure the adequacy of infrastructure and quality compliance.

CCP would further be responsible to process the solid waste and convert it into compost compliant with FCO standards, and properly package the compost.

ZACL will ensure 100 per cent offtake of compost manufactured by CCP.

Welcoming the decision to sign the agreement with ZACL and assuring the citizens that city will be garbage-free in the immediate future,

Mayor Surendra Furtado said he wanted to put in place an effective garbage management system to make the city garbage-free.

CCP Commissioner Sanjit Rodrigues said, “We are committed to reusing waste, and the agreement will ensure full recycling of garbage in the city.
