Parenteral drug units in the country are facing shortage of skilled workforce, which is the greatest handicap faced by the segment of the pharma industry, and the issue should be addressed in earnest, according to Sanjith Singh Lamba, president of the India chapter of the Parenteral Drug Association, a US-based organisation.

He was speaking to the media here on Friday on the sidelines of a workshop on parenteral drug units. He said the PDA was holding several such workshops to spread awareness about injection manufacturing process. Parenteral drugs are injected into the system.

“A few major parenteral drug manufacturers such as Hospira and Dr Reddy’s Labs have set up units in Visakhapatnam district. But there is vast scope for more units here, especially with the second pharma city coming up near Nakkapalli in the district,” he said.

Lamba said such workshops would also be conducted in Indore, Pune, Ahmedabad and Chandigarh. “These workshops would enable the Indian parenteral industry to measure up to global standards,” he said.

The Indian chapter of PDA was formed three years ago.

Vishal Sharma of VieNnl said his company had set up a parenteral drug unit near Bengaluru in Karnataka.

“We are also setting up a major parenteral drug testing lab at Hindupur in Anantapur district on the AP-Karnataka border. There are very few parenteral drug testing facilities in the country,” he said.
