The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Thursday expressed disappointment on the “delay” in the Ayodhya case and said the “patience of the Hindu community is being tested”. Simultaneously, former RSS ideologue KN Govindacharya wrote to the government, seeking live streaming of Supreme Court proceedings in the case.

The top court on Thursday decided to re-constitute a five-judge Constitution Bench to hear the Ayodhya title dispute case on January 29 after Justice UU Lalit, one of the members of the Bench, decided to recuse himself. The development took place after senior advocate Rajeev Dhavan, appearing for a Muslim party, pointed out that Justice Lalit had appeared as a lawyer for Rajasthan Governor Kalyan Singh in a related matter.

“Once again, the hearing on appeals concerning the Ramjanmabhoomi case has been adjourned. Our suspicion, that the opposition parties are creating hurdles in the way of decision on this matter, has been proven right. From January 10, the matter has now been postponed till January 29, which is a long period. The Hindu society is known for its patience and tolerance, but it is the responsibility of the judiciary to decide on the matter expeditiously,” said VHP working President Alok Kumar in a statement.

Demand for live-streaming

Meanwhile, Hindutva ideologue Govindacharya and KG Gupta of the Centre for Accountability and Systemic Change addressed their concerns to Cabinet Secretary PK Sinha, saying that the Centre should make arrangements before January 29 to ensure that citizens get the opportunity to witness the proceedings in “the nation’s oldest litigation which has a lot of confusion and peculiarities”.

“The whole country, including the Prime Minister, is eager for early resolution on this matter. For the last eight years, the matter has been pending before the Supreme Court. Countless attempts are being made by many parties to delay the hearings, details of which, the country must know,” the letter said, adding that the citizens have the fundamental right to know what is happening in the court.

The letter also referred to the apex court judgment which held that the live-streaming of the court proceedings in matters of national and constitutional importance can be allowed as “sunlight is the best disinfectant”.
