Customs officials at the Kochi airport on Wednesday seized 65 kg of peacock feathers from two passengers booked on a Kula Lumpur flight. Peacock feathers are a banned export item. A 64-year-old man hailing from Thrissur and his female assistant were detained and the feathers handed over to the Forest Department. Peacock feathers are said to be in high demand in Malaysia where there is a large community of Tamil Hindus who use them for religious purposes. Officials also seized 29 star turtles from a passenger booked on the same flight.
