The CPI(M) has said that people’s welfare is not possible unless the current government at the Centre is removed from office.

Addressing the media in Moodbidri in Dakshina Kannada district on Thursday, CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury said the Narendra Modi government had mounted a four-frontal attack on the people.

The government’s neo-liberal policies, more aggressive than those of the erstwhile UPA government, constituted the first attack on the people. This has resulted in the creation of two Indias: one for the rich and the other for the vast majority that is poor.

Emphasising on the need to reverse the present economic policies, Yechury said there was no shortage of resources in the country to improve the livelihood of the vast majority of people.

Communal polarisation was the second attack, the CPI(M) leader said. It is by dividing people that the BJP has managed to survive and win elections, he said.

A ban on people’s protests and democratic rights constituted the third attack on the people, he claimed.

Fourthly, India has been reduced to a subordinate ally of the US in the past three years, with the US declaring India as a major defence partner. A new axis of the US, Israel and India is being attempted, and this is a dangerous development, Yechury said, adding that this would have implications for the country’s unity.

Karnataka polls

To a query on the CPI(M)’s plans for the forthcoming Assembly polls in Karnataka, Yechury said the focus will be on people’s issues and on defeating the BJP.

Asked if the CPI(M) will plan a ‘Mahagatbandhan’ as was attempted in Bihar, he said such an alliance will have to be policy based. If parties are interested in defeating the communal forces it should be based on the alternative policies for Karnataka, he said.
