The Kongu Global Forum (KGF) has pleaded with Union Minister for Civil Aviation Suresh Prabhu and Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami that the present expansion plan for the Coimbatore airport is insufficient as it is limited to the development of the terminal building.
“The original proposal was to acquire 625 acres of land to enable extension of the runway. But it is learnt that the Airport Authority of India has sought to acquire only 365 acres. This will limit the expansion to upgradation of the existing terminal building and not runway expansion to facilitate bigger aircraft,” A Sakthivel, Chairman, KGF, said in his representations to them.
“Given the present trend, air traffic is bound to grow exponentially. The fact that bigger and wider aircraft would not be able to fly into Coimbatore due to insufficient length of the runway would seriously jeopardise air connectivity to this region. Any delay or scaling down of the project would have a cascading effect on the development of Kongu region, which has high growth potential,” Sakthivel added.
