In a move that could further multiply the problems of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, the Election Commission of India on Sunday issued a show-cause notice asking him to explain his election expenses in a paid news case. In a 104-page order, the Commission said that he failed to lodge his accounts of election expenses in a manner required by the Act and rules and asked him why he should not be disqualified. He is required to submit his reply within 20 days. The case relates to complaints against Chavan in the 2009 Maharashtra Assembly election, which he had won from the Bhokar constituency near Nanded. Chavan was the incumbent Chief Minister of Maharashtra at that time of the election.
