Union Cabinet Minister Nitin Gadkari’s speech asking voters not to “turn away Laxmi” has caught the attention of the Election Commission (EC).

The Commission sent a notice here on Monday, asking Gadkari to explain his statement made at an election rally in Latur, Maharashtra, on Sunday. The EC said in the notice that the Minister has prima facie violated the model code of conduct. The statement amounts to “abetting and promoting the electoral offence of bribery” and is punishable under Section 171 B and 17l E of the lndian Penal Code, it added.

It also reminded Gadkari that offering food, drink or entertainment during a campaign is punishable. Gadkari will have to file his reply by Wednesday.

The district electoral officer of Latur had sent an email to the EC on Monday, drawing attention to the fact that the Minister had made statements to induce voters to take a bribe if offered by someone and then decide how to vote. “Now, I am watching your faces and I have some skill of predicting the future by way of face reading. You have an opportunity of ‘Laxmi darshan’ in the next 10 days. Special people to get foreign-made, ordinary people to get local brand. Am I right?” Gadkari had asked the crowd.

The BJP leader added: “In these days of inflation, keep one thing in mind — eat what you wish and drink what you desire. Keep whatever you get. This is the time when illegally earned money can go to the poor.

“Therefore, do not say no to Laxmi. But think while you vote. Your vote should be for the development of Maharashtra.”
