Consumers of Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (Mescom) are likely to get facility to pay their power bills in post offices.

S. Sumanth, managing director of Mescom, said this while participating in a ‘Meet the Press’ programme organised by the Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalists’ Union here on Tuesday.

He said that Mescom and Department of Posts are in negotiations on introducing such a facility for the benefit of consumers. If that negotiation materialises, then power bills up to Rs 1,000 can be paid at a nearby post office.

Stating that there is a good network of post offices in rural areas, he said such a tie-up may help save the time and money of rural consumers.

Of the 18 lakh consumers in four districts coming under Mescom’s jurisdiction, nearly 8 lakh consumers are from rural areas. (Mescom has jurisdiction over the revenue districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Shimoga and Chikmagalur.)

Though Mescom had introduced such a facility a few years ago, it was stopped after some years. The facility is likely to be reintroduced in a month, as negotiations are on in this regard, Sumanth said.

CONTACT CARDS

The company had distributed cards, bearing the contact details of key officials, to consumers in the four districts under its jurisdiction. Similar such cards will be distributed once again during March-April this year. This card will give contact details of officers concerned to contact them during emergencies and power interruptions.

If these cards are not received by the consumers during March-April they can collect them from the Mescom’s offices in their area, he said.

On the power purchase cost in the total revenue of the company, he said the annual turnover of Mescom is around Rs 1650 crore. However, 70 per cent of this goes for the purchase of power, he added.
