President on 2-day visit to Kerala

President Pranab Mukherjee arrived here today on a two-day visit to the State capital.

Mukherjee was received at the airport by Governor H.R. Bhardwaj, Speaker G. Karthikeyan, Union Minister of State for Human Resources Development Shashi Tharoor, Mayor K. Chandrika, State Ministers and MLAs.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, who was in Delhi, accompanied the President in the special aircraft.

Mukherjee, coming to Kerala for the first time after becoming President, is scheduled to attend three functions tomorrow including the inauguration of Viswa Malayala Mahotsavam (World Malayalam Festival).

A cultural programme by artistes of Kerala Kalamandalam has been arranged tonight at the Raj Bhavan where the President would be staying.

The inauguration of the World Malayalam Festival is his first engagement in the capital city tomorrow.

As part of the 125th anniversary celebrations of State Legislative Assembly, the President will address the members of the House.

Later, the President is scheduled to inaugurate the golden jubilee celebrations of the Loyola College of Social Sciences at Sreekaryam near here before leaving for Delhi, official sources said.

Security in and around the city has been beefed up in view of his visit.
