Film exhibitors in the South have resumed screening of regional language films after a week-long protest against the exorbitant fee charged by digital print solutions providers. The majority of the 4,500 theatres showing regional language films had stopped screening from March 2.
The Joint Action Committee of the South Indian film industry called off the strike last night after getting an assurance from digital print providers on reducing the Virtual Print Fee (VPF). Players such as UFO and Qube charge a weekly VPF for providing digital projection equipment at the theatres. The theatres alleged that they had been charging a high fee though they had promised to reduce and phase it out after a few years.
